9/11
It seems as if more and more people have gotten over most of their grief and moved on since six years ago to the date on Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Because of the huge controversy surrounding the war in Iraq, which always seems to be looming in a negative direction, along with the new focus on next year’s presidential election, it seems as if Americans have focused their attention on other issues and have moved on since 9/11. The Associated press writes on September 11, 2007, “In Manhattan, victims' families said the ceremony in the park did not evoke the same emotions. Hundreds streamed out of the ceremony after about an hour and fewer than 60 remained at the end. The city estimated 3,500 family members and mourners turned out, down from 4,700 attendees at the fifth anniversary.” Watching other news programs briefly on CNN and NBC that night, I also noticed that reporter’s segments on the anniversary did not seem as prominent as some of the other stories that are ‘hot’ right now such as the current war in Iraq. Although many Americans still mourn and think about the horrible tragedy of 9/11, similar to every major tragedy in history such as the attacks at Pearl Harbor, or the Columbine shootings, over time people tend to not recognize these events as predominantly as before to try and move on.
